May

"Excavating Arts & Activism in Illinois & Wisconsin" (May 13)

Mess Hall
6932 N. Glenwood Ave.
Chicago, IL  60626

"Excavating Arts & Activism in Illinois and Wisconsin" was a discussion at Mess Hall that focused on examples and problems from neighboring states in creative activism. This event, which was co-presented by Mess Hall and Borderbend Arts Collective, was free and open to the public, and it included a potluck.

We discussed and compared the use of art strategies for grassroots political messaging and organizing, from within the Wisconsin Uprising to the work around closing prisons and opposing torture, fighting the mayoral austerity agendas, and organizing against the NATO summit in Illinois. We looked at tactics of visibility, of physical witness, of community coherence and of purposeful play. The focus was on applicable strategies contextualized within artist and activist practice, and how strategies applicable in one state or city context might or might not be transferable to another. We also explored the role of imagination, creative practice and the arts in building social movements. The participants included Alice Kim, Lane Hall, Yasmin Nair, Dan S. Wang, Dan Godston, and others who came to this event at Mess Hall.

Ex Libris: Portfolio Exchange Opening Reception

Friday, October 12 (7-10 p.m.)

Spudnik Press
1821 W. Hubbard, Suite 302
Chicago, IL 60622

Member Print Exchange in collaboration with Atlanta Printmakers Studio

Spudnik Press is proud to announce an exhibition in conjunction with Atlanta Printmakers Studio. Additionally, Ex Libris is part of the Seventh Annual Chicago Calling Arts Festival.

Bookplates were originally designed as small decorative labels pasted inside a book’s cover to indicate ownership. A long line of artists have been inspired and commissioned to design these miniature prints including Albrecht Durer, Hans Holbein, Aubrey Beardsley, Eric Gill, and Rockwell Kent to name a few. In the 19th century there was strong interest in ex libris collecting and society’s were formed to promote and commission bookplates from prominent artists.

Bookplates served as evidence of prestige and status as well as important documentation of the provenance of books. The images often related to the interests, career and accomplishments of the book’s owner, a play on the person’s name, and ancient myths or fables.

As Spudnik Press gears up to expand book and writing programming, and Atlanta Printmakers Studio present Print Big!, an event focused on books, reading, and literature, members of both studios have created new work that alludes to the rich correlation between the worlds of art, writing, and reading.

Participating Artists: Peery Angelika, Brandy Barker, Pam Beagle-Daresta, Douglas Bosley, Justin Crampton, Mariana Depetris, Jan DiPietro, Terri Dilling, Andrea Emmons, Kathy Garrou, Chelsea Glankler, Nancy Goldberg, Pedro A. Creative Currency: Words to Live By

Saturday, October 15 (3-11 p.m.)

2354 N. Milwaukee Ave., Chicago

co-presented by the Phantom Gallery Chicago Network
& Big Bang Banners

Earlier this year the Phantom Gallery Chicago Network and Big Bang Banners announced a call for artists and designers to “ante up” their creative currency -- to generate handmade yard signs that lift up our voices in our communities' visual landscapes with messages of “Civility, Cooperation, Encouragement and Peace.” This project culminated in site-specific installations of posters and images projected into neighborhood spaces.

This “Creative Currency: Words To Live By” / Chicago Calling project happened at a Phantom Gallery Chicago Network Space in Chicago’s Logan Square neighborhood; it was co-directed by Chicago-based artist and curator Alpha Bruton, and Washington, DC-based artist and curator Caryl Alexander. It
was presented by the Phantom Gallery Chicago Network, and it was part of SQUARED! Art + Community around the California/Milwaukee stop. Visit the Creative Currency blog to find out more.

The Seventh Annual Chicago Calling Arts Festival was part of Chicago Artists Month 2012, the seventeenth annual celebration of Chicago’s vibrant visual art community.
