Borderbend is happy to be facilitating a Chicago Imagining, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Arts and Culture and the Chicago Danztheatre Ensemble. This Imagining happens as pre- and post-show discussions, on the last date of the Midwest premier of Xtigone by Chicago playwright Nambi E. Kelley, presented by the Chicago Danztheatre Ensemble. This Chicago Imagining is among many Imaginings that are happening across the country this May and June.
Xtigone is a contemporary lyrical re-imagining of Sophocles’ Antigone about gun and gang violence in the city of Chicago told through hip-hop, music, dance and theatre, and the Chicago Danztheatre Ensemble is giving away 500 free tickets. Xtigone runs May 15th-June 14th, at the Chicago Danztheatre Ensemble's performance space at Ebenezer Lutheran Church.
During the pre- and post-production discussions, we will talk about themes explored in Xtigone as they resonate with contemporary Chicago -- e.g. youth culture, conflicts that might occur between individual convictions and group affiliations, and gang violence, as well as the power of the arts to transform attitudes and communities. We will also talk about how those themes relate to contemporary situations and dynamics nationwide.
From the USDAC website: "An Imagining is a vibrant, arts-infused gathering in which a community envisions its ideal future and identifies creative tactics to get there. Part performance, part facilitated dialogue, part celebration, these first Imaginings brought together diverse groups of artists, organizers, and community members to imagine what their neighborhoods (and the world) might look like in the year 2034, when art’s transformative power has been fully integrated into all aspects of public life. How might the face of education, environmental protection, health care, community development and other essential social goods change when the USDAC’s Statement of Values is fully embedded in society? And, what will it take to get there? The ideas, images, and visions generated during this pilot round of Imaginings will be documented and fed back to inform the USDAC’s emerging national story and strategy."
The pre- and post-production conversations are free, and the tickets for the Chicago Danztheatre Ensemble's final production of Xtigone are half off ($12.50); you can purchase tickets in advance at brownpapertickets.com, and use the code "endviolence." Refreshments will be provided.
Several months ago Borderbend hosted a People's State of the Union event, and we're looking forward to working with USDAC again!
